So, you want to know what all this is about.

Honestly, this started as a half-baked idea to keep my writing skills sharp after finishing my master’s degree. I’m used to writing about literature all day, every day, and in transitioning to an industry career, I wanted something I could do regularly that would make me write about literature after leaving the academy.

In truth, this is a passion project.

I have always loved the Gothic. The macabre, the uncanny, the deathness of life. The true motivation behind starting this website is an effort to find my way back to reading for pleasure through something I have always deeply, reverently loved.

This is why this blog will stay relatively casual — or as casual as it can be considering it is run by a (recovering) scholar. There will be brief references to my research and how what I present may connect to it, but my hope is that it is accessible to everyone, not just those of us trapped in a Bloody Chamber somewhere in the ivory tower.

So, with this established: my condolences, and please enjoy.

SO, ABOUT THE NAME…

As is usually the case with titles and names, I’m not the first (nor am I the only) person to come up with something good. I came up with the title “The Coroner’s Report” around 2015 when I launched the first (terrible) version of this blog as a freshman. In a cursory search to see if I was stepping on any toes carrying the name forward to this website, I have found one Twitter account that shares the name — an account that specialized in brief commentary on horror movies — but as of 2021/08/20 it has been inactive since about 2015. I have also found an Instagram account with a similar name that covers punk rock editorial content from Australia, but that only has about 8 posts so far. I found another similar blog-type website with the same title, but there does not seem to be any content on it. As such, let this serve as a brief acknowledgment that intertextuality is alive and well and ideas never truly occur in a vacuum. I will also state that I make no money off of the name of this website, and I have no intent to monetize it at this time. That being said, any of the content that does appear on this website is my intellectual property and is subject to the legal protections associated with that status. My hope is, though, that this disclaimer simply exists as a preambulatory peace treaty should any conflict occur.
